Abused Child in Search of Safety, The: Lessons from Florida
Abused Child in Search of Safety, The: Lessons from Florida

Kent S. Miller, Ph.D., has gathered together this analysis of the current child welfare scene that should give everyone pause, because by abandoning our at-risk children we are sabotaging our nation's future. This is a succinct and factual look at a controversial and politicized subject. Richard Wexler, director of the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform says, "Not satisfied with scholarly treatises and second-hand accounts, Prof. Miller spent part of his retirement working in child welfare offices to see the problems for himself. The result is a book that combines the rigor of a scholar with the firsthand insights of a good journalist−a useful guide for anyone looking for ways to fix a badly broken system." 171 pp. with index.

Based on Dr. Miller's involvement with the Florida program which has been racked with the scandals of missing and murdered children, this book points up the weakening resolve in this country to care for abused children which is a predicament that must be addressed immediately. As Laura Castle said in her review for Amazon, "This book is a must-read for anyone who is concerned about. the incidence of child abuse in the United States. It is easy to read and very informative. The author, Kent S. Miller, presents all sides of the controversy as to when a child needs to be removed from a home and when other alternatives such as parenting classes are a better option. The problems with our current child welfare systems are addressed as well as the neccesity of having a system to protect children from abuse. Excellent book!"

KENT S. MILLER, Ph.D., is an emeritus professor of psychology at the Florida State University, Tallahassee, who has spent much of his professional work focused on mental disability law and the relations between the mental health and criminal justice systems. He decided to volunteer in the Department of Children and Families to try to understand why they were getting such bad press. This book is a result of that time with the DCF.
