Escape from God: The Use of Religion & Philosophy to Evade Responsibility
Escape from God: The Use of Religion & Philosophy to Evade Responsibility

Philosophy professor Dean Turner notes that the American society, with the highest percentage of college graduates of any nation on earth, having grown more erudite and informed, has experienced a rising rate of alcoholism, drug addiction, crime, divorce, suicide and mental illness. Acquiring more degrees does not preclude becoming morally and spiritually lost. This escapism can be reversed by turning back to God and exploring the high price of God's sustaining, empowering love demonstrated concretely in God's sending the beloved son Jesus Christ to bring humankind back to a relationship with God. By looking into the face of God and bowing to God's authority, we can accept what is required of us to have a happy and fulfilling life.

This innovative examination of pain and joy in the human and divine experience gives new meaning to the trials and difficulties we face on our life's journey. Rather than try to escape pain, Dr. Turner contends that just as pain was integral to Christ's ministry on earth, it is also demanded of all humans who must face loneliness and suffering as Christ did. As Christ paid a high price out of great love, so must all God's children be willing to pay a high price for the privilege of loving and being loved. Dr. Turner aims to show how modern, skeptical people can learn to believe in an ethically meaingful God without doing violence to their own intellects. Hardcover, 291 pp. with index.

Dean Turner, Ph.D., is a professor emeritus at the University of Northern Colorado, Greeley, when he has been recongized for many teaching honors including "Outstanding Teacher of the Year" and "Colorado Teacher Who Makes a Difference".
